Officially named in 2004, candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis is an obligate intracellular, gram-negative bacterium. The pathogen is characterised by endotheliotropism but has not been cultivated in vitro so far and thus could not be completely described yet. Characterization of 'Candidatus Neoehrlichia lotoris' (family Anaplasmataceae) from raccoons (Procyon lotor) Michael J. Yabsley, Staci M. Murphy, M. Page Luttrell, Benjamin R. Wilcox, Elizabeth W. Howerth, Ulrike G. Munderloh “Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis” infection has not been previously reported in domestic animals. During the last decade, DNA of a new species of intracellular bacteria in the family Anaplasmataceae was sequenced from ticks and rodents from Europe and Asia.

Background: Candidatus (Ca.) Neoehrlichia (N.) mikurensis is an emerging tick-borne pathogen of humans that is closely related to Ehrlichia and Anaplasma species. This strict intracellular bacterium escapes detection by routine microbiologic diagnostic methods such as blood culture leading to considerable under-diagnosis of the infectious disease it causes, neoehrlichiosis. A comparison of the morphologic and molecular characterization of that isolate with earlier, closely related sequences in the GenBank database supported classification of the isolate in a novel genetic cluster within the family Anaplasmataceae; thus, the nomenclature “Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis” was proposed for all current organisms in this group . The first description of the bacterium was published as late
Of 771 rodents, 68 (8.8%) were infected by Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis, but no other Anaplasmataceae were found. Candidatus N. mikurensis has recently been found in human patients in Germany, Switzerland, and Sweden, which suggests that this could be an emerging pathogen in Europe. U2 - 10.3201/eid1709.101058.
